 Laundry Monitor

Laundry Monitor is developed for manual monitoring of beta/gamma contamination of clothing like lab-coats (aprons), boiler suits, hand gloves or shoe covers used by personnel in radioactive area in nuclear power plants/research labs. Normally these clothing are checked for contamination and segregated into active and non-active lots before sending out of the plant for processing by plant laundry. It is a practice to check inward laundry also to confirm whether the cloths are non-contaminated before use.

Para Electronics has supplied laundry Monitors of different configurations i.e. BOX type or FLAT BED type. Both these configurations use energy compensated GM Tubes. However beta/gamma sensitive tubes also can be supplied.

In BOX Type Laundry Monitor the system has Detector Head (measurement zone) adequate for type of laundry to be monitored.  The measurement zone is covered by set of thin walled GM Tubes to measure beta/gamma radiations from the laundry. Relevant processing electronics is housed around the measurement zone. Suitable LED indicators are provided around the measurement zone to indicate zonal contamination level or hot spots of the laundry being monitored. Alarms and contamination level is indicated on contamination monitor (main measuring instrument) in CPS value in accordance to the user specifications. The size and shape of the measurement zone, contamination level ranges and background activity subtraction can be suitably modified to any different requirements.

PAM-1 : Plutonium in Air Monitor

The increasing demand for safety of operators in nuclear plants, calls for continuous air monitoring. It is important to know beta and alpha activities remain below imposed limits. Plutonium In Air Monitor is useful to detect alpha particles in air due to low activity plutonium. The system will be useful at a place where fuel reprocessing / fabrication takes place.

Important aspect of Plutonium In Air Monitor System is the charged particle detector. Silicon charged particle detectors such as diffused junction detector and surface barrier detector have served the scientific and industrial community for several decades. Modern ion implanted silicon detector such as PIPS detectors form the modern version of a charged particle detector. PIPS detectors have low leakage current and long-term stability which are desired features of continuous air monitors.

Pu Monitor has a built in 1 K channel analyzer with input pulse range of 0 to 8 Volts. Each pulse from the spectroscopy amplifier is analyzed by the ADC and appropriately added to the spectrum. LCD graphics display provides the updated spectrum of counts verses channel continuously. As the input count rate is extremely low, there is no missing of any pulse as the conversion time of ADC is much faster (125 microsecond) than the input pulse rate.

The Pu Monitor has two operating modes – Setup Mode and Run Mode. Pu monitor has a facility to set up four ROIs, counting time interval and alarm level for each ROI integral. User can set two alarm levels. During run mode, ROI integral is calculated after completion of counting time interval. During fuel reprocessing, daughter products like radon are also generated. To cancel the effect of these products, user can set ROI for these products and can subtract the integral from ROI of Plutonium. If integral is above the first alarm level, visual alarm is activated. If integral is above the second alarm level, audio and visual alarms are activated. Second alarm level is for critical condition. Other features of the system include serial communication, relay outputs for remote monitoring.

Air sampling system is an integral part of Plutonium in Air Monitor. For detection Silicon Surface Barrier or PIPS detector with resolution of at least 20% is used. This detector is mounted in detector housing. The filter holder assembly is fitted on the detector housing. Vacuum pump sucks the air through the filter holder. Alpha particles in the air deposit on the filter paper. The system is designed in such a way that the filter paper can be replaced easily without disturbing the detector. Trolley to place the vacuum pump, detector and monitor unit can be provided. This arrangement makes the system portable.

 Foot Monitor

Foot Monitor Model PFT-1 manufactured by Para Electronics is developed to detect the nuclear contamination on the shoes. This unit is designed around 4 nos of thin walled GM tubes (typ1 719) for detection of beta/gamma contamination on the bottom of the footware. A pulse from each GM tube is counted independently before all the counts are added together  to determine if the aggregate counts are below the set level. Counting time, Alarm level are user settable. Audio/Visual alarms are provided when the contamination level crosses the set limit. LCD menu display indicates the status of the contamination and is used for diagnostic purposes also. The detection of person's standing is done by the pulses from GM tubes.

GM tubes, 4 nos used in Model PFT-1 are surrounded by 6 mm thick lead shield. This reduces the background counts. Foot Monitor continuously counts the background counts and stores the latest background. These background counts are subtracted from the actual counts. Net counts are used fro alarm activation.
